NOVEMBER IS DIABETES AWARENESS MONTH

World Diabetes Day is November 14th

Founded in January 1979 as the Bermuda "Diabetic" Association, by a group of professionals in response to the real need for education of people in the community with diabetes. Change of name occurred in 1992, to "Diabetes", the same as international associations for diabetes.

Services Include: public diabetes screenings; sponsored workshops for health professionals; an annual grant for further education in diabetes care; a quarterly newsletter. Import of medication and blood glucose monitors for sale through Bermuda TB, Cancer and Health Association; teaching patients how to use blood glucose monitors. Sponsoring children to attend diabetes summer camps. Guest speakers are invited to general membership meetings. In 1996 an Epidemiology Study was completed. The results showed that 1 in 9 adult Bermudians are diabetic. In 1998, the second phase of the study started. Thirty-two impaired glucose tolerant participants from the 1996 study will be monitored for ten years in the hope that diabetes can be prevented if they follow a healthy lifestyle.
