The Hamilton Rotary Club welcomes you to our Tuesday Luncheon
Bermuda Chamber of Commerce – 1 Point Pleasant Road – Hamilton

The Rotator - August 23, 2005

Last Meeting: August 16, 2005  -  Pres Jefferson asked Imm. PP  Averylon to lead us in singing the National Anthem and Rtn Derek Smith to lead us in singing the Rotary Grace.

Attendance, Visitors and Guests - We had 13 members in attendance with no visitors or guests.

Student Loan Fund Raffle - Rtn Lidge manned the welcome desk and collected for the Student Loan Fund raffle. PP Danny was the lucky winner of the first prize but PP Averylon with all his ‘experience’ could not find the Ace of Hearts for the jackpot.

Business:

  -  Pres Jefferson reminded members of the Committee of 25 Tag day on 19th August outside the Library.

  -  Mrs. Kelmar Richards Principal of Cedarbridge will speak to the club in September on Literacy in the schools.

  -  The Wine appreciation Fellowship cruise was a great success and Pres Jefferson would like to see it become an annual event.

Guest Speaker  -  PP Averylon introduced Jim Fourqurean, Associate Professor and Chairman of the Department of Biological Sciences and a member of the Southeast Environmental Research Center at Florida International University, where he has been on the faculty since 1993.  Jim has published on a diverse array of topics, including estuarine hydrology, environmental biochemistry, water quality, plant animal interactions, nutrient limitation of primary production and seagrass community ecology.  He spoke to the club regarding the tropical plant and animal communities in the ocean surrounding the Island and the concern over the diminishing areas of seagrass.

Pres. Jefferson gave the thanks of the club to our speaker.

Rotary Information

The Rotary Foundation is every one of us as Rotarians; it is not a separate organization.  It is the only charitable organization funded by Rotarians for programs and projects identified by Rotarians and administered by Rotarians at the project site.

The Rotary Foundation is a not-for-profit corporation that supports the efforts of Rotary International to achieve world understanding and peace through international humanitarian, educational, and cultural exchange programs. It is supported solely by voluntary contributions from Rotarians and friends of the Foundation who share its vision of a better world.

The Funds resources come back to us in the form of matching grants and for new humanitarian and educational programs.  But in recent years the requests for grants and support have outgrown the contributions.  If we do not support the Foundation these programs will have to be reduced.

The Foundation was created in 1917 by Rotary International's sixth president, Arch C. Klumph, as an endowment fund for Rotary "to do good in the world." It has grown from an initial contribution of US$26.50 to more than US$55 million contributed in 2002-03. Its event-filled history is a story of Rotarians learning the value of service to humanity.

The Foundation's Humanitarian Programs fund international Rotary club and district projects to improve the quality of life, providing health care, clean water, food, education, and other essential needs primarily in the developing world. One of the major Humanitarian Programs is PolioPlus, which seeks to eradicate the polio virus worldwide. Through its Educational Programs, the Foundation provides funding for some 1,200 students to study abroad each year. Grants are also awarded to university teachers to teach in developing countries and for exchanges of business and professional people. Former participants in the Foundation's programs have the opportunity to continue their affiliation with Rotary as Foundation Alumni.

Our District has 46 clubs and approx 1740 members and has a goal of every Rotarian supporting the Foundation with an annual giving of $100

For more information on current Foundation program awards and financial status see Rotary Foundation Fact Card and the Rotary Foundation Annual Report, both of which are available for download on the RI web site.
