The Reading Clinic is a private, non-profit Registered Charity, founded in 1968 by Elizabeth Kitson. The Clinic functioned from Mrs. Kitson's home, in Warwick, for 23 years and, in 1991, moved into a purpose-built facility on Serpentine Road, Pembroke. The Director and 'on-call' psychologists conduct psychoeducational assessments. Tutors trained in the Orton-Gillingham approach to teaching students with dyslexia provide one-on-one tutoring for approximately 80 students - children and adults. Tutor training courses are held every other year. In response to requests from government and private schools, the Clinic's tutor-supervisor also conducts teacher training courses. Social Skills and Anger Management training, for persons at risk for learning disabilities, is conducted in Bermuda's Correctional Facilities. Reading Clinic-trained tutors are employed, part-time, to teach reading to inmates. Coming Events November 2004 - Conference on Learning Differences. Speakers will present the latest research, and there will be workshop sessions for parents and professionals. |
